EXAL 2021

The Department of English and the Department of Arabic and Translation Studies at American University of Sharjah (AUS) will co-host the fourth meeting of the Experimental Arabic Linguistics Conference (EXAL) on 4-6 April in 2021, which will be held online. The aim of EXAL 2021 is to bring various groups of people together who employ experimental methods to study the Arabic language and exchange innovative ideas and approaches to Arabic linguistics. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

• L1/L2 acquisition
• Bilingualism, multilingualism, and code-switching
• Arabic in multilingual contexts and heritage language acquisition
• Language pathology, language impairment, and sign language
• Corpus linguistics
• Computational linguistics and NLP
• Psycholinguistic and neurolinguistics studies

There will be two sessions at EXAL 2021. The regular sessions will be held during the first two days (4-5 April, 2021) and the last day of the conference (6 April, 2021) will host a special theme session on Emirati and Gulf Arabic. And the list of the invited speakers for EXAL 2021 is the following.

For the regular sessions (4-5 April, 2021)

• David Wilmsen (American University of Sharjah)

We invite abstract submissions for (a) long presentations (25-minute oral presentations followed by 10 minutes of discussion and (b) short presentations (10 minutes and 5 minutes of discussion) for the regular sessions, and also (c) short presentations (10 minutes and 5 minutes of discussion) for the special theme session. All submissions should report original and previously unpublished research. Each author may submit at most one individual and one joint paper. Abstracts including the title and 1-2 keywords should not exceed one page (A4 or Letter size), with a possible second page for examples, figures, and references. Please use 12 size fonts with at least 2.5 cm or 1-inch margins. Abstracts should be anonymous and should be submitted as PDF or Word Documents.
