    The DoBeS (Documentation of Endangered Languages) Programme will organise an international summer school on the methods and technology of language documentation, pending funding from the Volkswagen Foundation. The ten-day summer school is intended to introduce promising students (max. 50 persons) of linguistics and adjacent disciplines (ethnology, anthropology, African Studies, Asian Studies, etc.) into the aims, objectives and methods of fieldwork with a view to the documentation of endangered languages. The participants will be taught and trained by members of the DoBeS programme and other internationally renowned specialists. The teaching will be undertaken in form of lectures, lecture tutorials, and seminars; the application of fieldwork methods will be trained in fieldwork tutorials. All classes will be given in English and students from all around the world will be accepted. The summer school will take place in conjunction with the international conference on ''A World of Many Voices. Interfaces in Language Documentation: Linguistics, Anthropology, Speech Communities, and Technology'' will take place at the same venue (Sep. 4-5, cf.; the conference will be open for the summer school participants. The organising team consists of Nikolaus Himmelmann (Coordinator), Peter Austin, Jost Gippert, Sergio Meira, Ulrike Mosel, Romuald Skiba and Marcel Erdal, Bernd Nothofer, and Rainer Vo´┐Żen (local committee).

    CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION Applicants for participation must prove that they have successfully passed the initial stage of a studies program in linguistics and/or a related subject (i.e., a minimum of two years of studies). Participants whose expenses are not covered otherwise can apply for financial support with the organising committee (maximum allowance for travel and accommodation is 400 Euro). There will be no enrolment fee. Attendees are responsible for ensuring that they have the correct visa and travel documents to attend the summer school in Germany. Successful applicants must organise travel and medical insurance before coming to Germany and must prove this to the organisers.

    The application should contain:

    -a brief, tabular CV including relevant contact details (in particular a current email address)

    -a short statement (max. 500 words) on why attending this school is important for you. If you are already planning a fieldwork project, provide details for that.

    -in case you apply for financial support: amount applied for plus substantiation

    The DEADLINE for sending in applications is the 15th of May, 2004.
