Mapping Africa in the English Speaking World addresses issues ofrepresentations of Africa in the English speaking world. English has becomea global language which has transformed the world into a global village, and as Graddol (2008) states, it "is now redefining national and individualidentities worldwide; shifting political fault lines; creating new globalpatterns of wealth and social exclusion; and suggesting new notions ofhuman rights and responsibilities of citizenship." The book grapples withthe relationship between Africa and the rest of the English speaking world, and touches on issues of (Euro-American) misrepresentations of thecontinent in literary works and films etc, misrepresentations which arenevertheless passed as true and infallible knowledge about Africa; themarginalization of Africans; the marginalization of African scholarship, the English language and culture versus African languages and cultures;language policy and language diglossia in the continent, African theatre inpost colonial Africa, negotiations of identity in the post colonial era,and relations between gender and language, among other things. These issuesare bound to stimulate debates on Africa and its representation(s) in theEnglish speaking world.
