Description:

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) isseeking faculty research scientists from the field of Instructed SecondLanguage Acquisition to work in its interdisciplinary research programinvestigating foreign/second language acquisition, enhancement andmaintenance by government language professionals. The successful candidatewill work with or lead multidisciplinary teams to examine innovativeapproaches that potentially promote fast and effective, job-relevantlanguage learning, often to very high levels. Current research projectsinclude aptitude-by-treatment interaction studies, curriculum studies,technology studies, and investigations of other efficiencies in L2instruction.

Appointments to CASL are as members of the research faculty of theUniversity of Maryland, under renewable three-year contracts, with acompetitive salary (12-month) and benefits.

Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in AppliedLinguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Second Language Studies, or arelated field, and should possess a record of research achievement inInstructed SLA. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to tacklecomplex, interdisciplinary research and to work collaboratively with arange of institutions and researchers. Ideal candidates will have intereststhat complement CASL's strategic partners on campus (such as SecondLanguage Acquisition, Measurement Statistics and Design, Linguistics, orPsychology).

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and already have, or be willing toobtain, the appropriate security clearance.

CASL, established in 2003, is the nation's 10th university-affiliatedresearch center. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science researchthat results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the workof government language professionals. Our research focuses on improvingknowledge of less commonly taught languages; enhancing the acquisition andmaintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals;advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a governmentprofession; and improving the quality of human language technology.
