Dissertation Title: Instructions and Participation in the Second Language Classroom

Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics
Dissertation Director:
Johannes Wagner Catherine E. Brouwer
Dissertation Abstract:

The dissertation investigates how students participate in the secondlanguage classroom. It discusses second language classroom pedagogy fromlooking at how students participate and display their understanding of theongoing activity they are engaged in. More specifically, studentparticipation is related to the teacher's instructions and the ways inwhich these instructions make specific kinds of participation relevant forthe students. This is analyzed primarily from a communicative orinteractional approach. Instructions are in this way analyzed asinteractional tasks that students orient to, and deal with, during thecourse of the teacher's management of the lesson. 'Interactional tasks' arerelated to the notion of conditional relevance, and the dissertation dealsspecifically with sequence organization and turn-allocation. Each of thethree analytic chapters, which are written as independent articles, dealswith participation, instructions and conditional relevance.
