Call for Papers:

Integrating Skills in Language Assessment: Current Practices, Challenges, and Future Directions

The American University in Cairo (AUC) is pleased to announce its second International Perspectives on Assessing World Languages (IPAWL) conference following the huge success of last year’s conference. The IPAWL conference is organized by the AUC Department of Applied Linguistics (MATESOL program), the Department of Arabic Language Instruction, and the Department of English Language Instruction, in collaboration with the Fulbright Commission and the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIC). The conference targets assessment specialists and language professionals working with various languages in different parts of the world.

The theme of the IPAWL conference this year focuses on integrated skills in language assessment. The integration of skills in language assessment has received substantial attention with the inclusion of integrated tasks in different language tests. Integrated tasks are perceived as authentic since they tend to replicate activities in the target language use domain. In such contexts, language skills are rarely used independently and consequently language tests should reflect this reality. The purpose of this conference is to showcase assessment efforts in different settings that have employed integrated tasks. The focus will be on projects that aim at using such tasks in both classroom and large-scale assessment settings. Projects investigating assessment of specific language skills (e.g., assessing writing, assessing reading …etc.) following an integrated approach are much welcomed. Another area of interest is related to the role of technology within an integrated paradigm. Topics focusing on other language assessment issues could be considered as well.

There are four types of presentations as follows:

Paper (30 minutes)

The presenter will report on a paper or an action research project for around 25 minutes, followed by 5 minutes for questions.

Workshop (45 minutes)

The workshop usually provides an interactive experience for the audience, with specific focus on integrated language assessment activities that teachers can use in their daily classes. Other ideas for potential workshops include assessment literacy skills, such as test item analysis, developing scoring rubrics, or designing test tasks.

Poster Session (1 hour)

A poster session gives the opportunity for presentations that are suitable for visual display. A poster is usually prepared on a relatively large sheet and mounted on a board. Specific guidelines will be sent to the poster presenters once their proposals are accepted.

Work in Progress (1 hour)

The work in progress (WIP) session is designed for researchers or teachers currently working on action research projects related to integrated language assessment. These projects are expected to be at their early stages in order to benefit from the feedback provided by the experts during the conference. Specific guidelines will be sent to WIP presenters once their proposals are accepted.

Please, include a 75-word summary (for the program book) and a 250-word abstract for the proposal review. In addition, please make sure that you include a 75-word bio.

Notifications will be sent to authors of accepted proposals by November 1, 2019.
