Translation in language learning and teaching

We are inviting authors and researchers to send proposals for articles to be published in issue 113 of the Bulletin suisse de linguistique appliquée (Summer 2021).

Theme:
Dominating language teaching approaches with the grammar-translation method, then rejected by ''pre-communicative'' methods (direct method, audio-oral and audio-visual methods) and bypassed by supporters of communicative approaches, translation has become more popular among language teachers in the last few years. Though largely missing from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (2001) , this approach has staged a comeback today, especially in the chapter entitled ''Mediation'' of the 2018 CEFR Companion Volume with New Descriptors where it is called ''translating a written text'' (Council of Europe 2018: 115). These skills are considered essential in our everchanging multilingual and multicultural world (de Carlo 2012). Teachers who introduce this method in their language classes are now trying to move away from the grammar-translation methods and reinvent translation activities in the classroom. In this issue, we would like to explore the different forms taken by this resurgence of translation in language learning and teaching, as well as the goals it seeks to achieve. We are interested in translation towards L1 and L2 (Campbell 1998; Carreres 2006). In addition, translation is not applied today as it was in the grammar-translation method due to changes in translation tools, especially the many digital tools now available to both professional and amateur translators. This element will also be explored in this issue.

Selected articles must concern one of the following subjects:
- Action research on the uses and modalities of translation in L1 or L2 learning and teaching
- Studies on the tools (dictionaries, concordances, machine translators) used by students in translation or L2 courses
- Theoretical considerations on translation into L2 for language teaching

Important dates:
- 30 Aug 2020: Deadline to send abstracts (name of author(s), title, a short description of max. 200 words, excluding bibliography)
- 15 Sept 2020: Notification of acceptance
- 28 Feb 2021: Submission deadline for the first version and double-blind review process
- 15 April 2021: Feedback from reviewers and correction by author(s)
- 20 June 2021: Submission deadline for the final version
- 30 Aug 2021: Last proofreading by author(s)
- 01 Oct 2021: Publication

Format:
Contributions can be submitted in French, Italian, German or English. Their length should not exceed 45,000 characters (including spaces, bibliography and footnotes). Abstracts (200 words, excluding bibliography) must be sent by email to Sara Cotelli Kureth before August 30 2020.
