Meeting Description:

The Sociolinguistics Symposium Committee at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is pleased to announce the third annual Sociolinguistics Symposium (SOSY), which will be held virtually on February 26-27, 2021 in conjunction with the 13th Annual Illinois Language and Linguistics Society Conference.

SOSY is a graduate student-run symposium aimed primarily at providing graduate and advanced undergraduate students a forum to present and discuss their research on topics related to sociolinguistics. Following the success of last year’s symposium on “Rethinking Speech Communities”, this year’s theme is “Marginalized Language: Race, Identity and Society”. This session invites abstracts that focus on various semiotic practices —including but not limited to codeswitching, stance-taking, lexical choice, script choice, and phonetic variation—of meaning-making in different modalities. We especially encourage research that explores the identity processes uncovered, recovered, encouraged or discouraged at the loci of linguistic marginalization through a variety of analytical/theoretical sociolinguistic approaches.

Call for Papers:

Submissions are limited to two abstracts per author: one single author abstract and one multi-author abstract OR two multi-author abstracts. The student must be the first author and presenter. Deadline for abstract submissions: November 14, 2020,11:59pm CST. Authors will be notified of abstract decisions by mid December, 2020.
