Description:

One 4-year PhD position in the DFG Research Unit ‘Cyclic Optimization’ as scientific coordinator

Starting date: October 1, 2021
Salary: Fully Funded Position
Deadline: June 30, 2021

The DFG Research Unit ‘Cyclic Optimization’ starting October 1, 2021 with 15 new research positions will explore the interaction of cyclicity and optimization in all areas of grammar: phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. It comprises 8 single research projects with 15 new research positions, and a budget of roughly 4,5 Million Euros. The position announced here is intended to
assist the speaker of the RU in the scientific administration of the overall project, but also, and more crucially, to conduct research in any area of the RU’s research agenda not directly covered by the single subprojects.

The central administrative task of the scientific coordinator will be to develop integrated programs for workshops, colloquia, joint retreats, and the rotation program of the RU (an obligatory exchange program for employees in the subprojects to carry out small-scale research projects under the supervision of other subprojects), in close cooperation with the speaker of the RU (Jochen Trommer). In addition, the coordinator will administrate the website of the research unit and ensure its visibility in social media and the press.

We actively encourage dissertations of employees related to the Research Unit topics. An ideal background for dissertation projects is provided by the Leipzig linguistic graduate school IGRA with its structured course program, which welcomes PhD students of the Research Unit (https://www.philol.uni-leipzig.de/en/research-training-group-interaction-of-grammatical-building-blocks/).

Check the website of the Research Unit (https://www.philol.uni-leipzig.de/en/institute-of-linguistics/research/ru-cyclic-optimization/) for more information and additional job announcements (we also welcome parallel applications for different positions in the Research Unit).

Tasks:
- Planning and organization of workshops, colloquia, retreats, and rotation program
- Maintenance of the Research Unit’s website and public relations
- Empirical research on data relevant for cyclic optimization models
- Formal modeling of linguistic data in theoretical phonology, morphology, syntax, or semantics

Qualification:
- Master degree in linguistics or related fields
- Expertise in phonology, morphology, syntax, or semantics
- Ability to work with data from unfamiliar languages
- Interest in theoretical analyses

Salary:
The position is fully funded, i.e., comfortably covers your living expenses in Leipzig, including social security, health insurance, and other benefits. The specific salary follows the pay scale of the German public service system (Research Associate position, 65% of the German TVL-13 pay scale).

Please send your application (German or English) including a CV, a statement of motivation, and two work samples (e.g. MA thesis or term paper) as one pdf to jtrommeruni-leipzig.de until June 30, 2021.

Two letters of recommendation should be sent to this address directly from the referees.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.

Applications Deadline: 30-Jun-2021
