What in the brain does the speaking?

Vitória Piai, Ph.D.
Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour
Radboud University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands

Speaking involves not only preparation and execution of motor programmes, but also the access of conceptual and lexical information in long-term memory, as well as controlled processes for selection and monitoring. Studying this intricate sequence of processes benefits from time-resolved measures, such as those based on the brain's electrophysiology. In this talk, however, I will argue that in order to answer what, exactly, in the brain does the speaking, we need to overcome not only methodological hurdles, but also major conceptual ones. For the methodological hurdles in particular, I will use simulations of electrophysiology to illustrate a couple of scenarios that lead to erroneous conclusions about brain and language. Then, using appropriate methodology, I will focus on the retrieval of conceptual and lexical information from memory using a combination of methods, in both neurologically healthy and stroke-aphasia participants, highlighting the importance of temporal and inferior parietal brain areas.
